Marines are being questioned in the death of a seven year old horse in Onslow County.

Owner Elizabeth Kachmor tells WITN News that "Alderbaran" began acting sick on November 9th. She took horse to the NC State Veterinarian Hospital where he died this past Friday.

X-rays showed a .22 caliber bullet lodged in the horse's liver. Kachmor believes three Marines who live on property near the horse may be responsible for his death.

A spokesman for the 2nd Marine Division says a group of Marines are currently being questioned about the incident. The Onslow County Sheriff's Department is also investigating what happened.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting of a horse in Bear Creek. That investigation has included questioning of a group of Marines who live in the area, said 1st Lt. Philip Klay, spokesman for the 2nd Marine Division.

Onslow County Sheriff's Capt. Rick Sutherland confirmed the investigation, but would not provide further details.

"The case has been assigned to detective Mark Scott," Sutherland said.

The horse's owner Elizabeth Kachmor said she is "furious" her 7-year-old Canadian Sport Horse named Alderbaran has been killed. She has owned the animal for three years.

"I just hope people will realize how important animals are to some people," she said. "They are really a part of your family."

The horse was in its paddock acting strangely on the morning of Nov. 9. The stable's staff found a small wound on his side and the horse had a temperature of 102°F, Kachmor said.

The horse was taken to North Carolina State University's veterinary hospital in Raleigh on Nov. 11. A week later, a veterinarian ordered X-rays of the horse's abdomen and the small wound on the side of the horse.

The X-ray showed a .22-caliber bullet lodged in the horse's liver. The bullet has been turned over to authorities, according to staff at the hospital.

Sheriff's detectives found .22-caliber shell casings near the stable, Kachmor said.

"We thought he was doing better, but the damage from the bullet was too extensive," Kachmor said. The horse had to be euthanized Friday.

Authorities say they have developed suspects and taken possession of the firearm possibly used to shoot a horse in Hubert last week.

Onslow County Sheriff's detectives found .22-caliber shell casings near the horse's stable in the Bear Creek area and a veterinarian found a .22-caliber bullet lodged in the horse's liver. The horse had to be euthanized Friday.

A press release issued by the Onslow County Sheriff's Office Wednesday said the horse's death is the most recent incident involving the random shooting of animals on a farm. Sheriff Ed Brown declined to comment on any other animals involved, how long the shootings have been going on or on any further details on the investigation.

"We are not giving that information," he said.

Sheriff's detective Mark Scott has been assigned to the case. According to the press release the investigation "soon could produce an arrest."
