One more thing I forgot to mention, MSG duty is harder than it looks. I won't dig too deep in the specifics, but I will say that I would much rather be in Iraq than on this duty. I was in Fallujah in 2006, that place was a luxury compared to my two posts as an MSG (Africa and Cuba). I don't hear anyone complaining about the ICM Marines earn for 3 months of work, but they will complain about the MSG ribbon for 3 years of work (harder work in my view).

No - I was in Fallujah '06. Now maybe CAMP Fallujah '06 was a luxury but the city and the peninsula were not. As long as they do it well, I try to never put anyone down for their job, especially when things like gender limit their options. HAVING SAID THAT, I take a bit of offense to having my time in-country written off so lightly. Not to start a "grunt/POG" debate because I DON'T feel that way, (scout's honor!) but when the topic comes up we are constantly reminded how necessary their direct contributions to the overall effort are. If this is the case, then the RE type who earned his/her ICM from the rear was every bit as essential as I was to the mission, hence their award of the ICM and therefore your resentment. Thanks for your stellar performance and dedication (no sarcasm, 100% genuine. ) but please don't try to put me down to make your own case. Semper Fi.

Most SF dont guard sub bases. The majority or sent to their companies (mine was Rota, Spain) and if they are luck like I was get sent TAD with every Med Float that came through so we could get experience. At least that how it was in the early 90's.

Surprisingly enough Doc...... those young Marines over there ask frequently what they will get out of the deployment. They are looking for that "chest candy" to wear back home to impress Suzie. The mentallity of our young Marines today is a lot different than when you were in.

Everyone has a different experience in Iraq. What I was trying to convey is that I find MSG duty harder than what I did in Iraq. I got a medal for Iraq, but there is confusion over whether or not I should get a ribbon for MSG duty. The ICM is not in dispute, it is the MSG ribbon that is in dispute, I was only using Iraq as an example to state my case. These are my experiences, I'm sure you had different experiences during your time in the Corps. Semper Fidelis

Maybe you should stay away from this thread.... sounds like you have some pretty deep issues about ribbons and those who have given their lives for this country. The focus of this thread is ribbons. I'm not saying that your view is wrong or not welcomed, but it does sound like you have some strong personal issues that this thread provokes. Maybe you should avoid this thread and talk to someone... just looking out for you Doc.

Doc...think she's talking more about how Marines are so quick to discredit the service of others. I'm pretty sure she's not specifically worried about the ribbon because that would be a disgrace. It's not like she could rock and roll in open combat in Iraq so she did the next best thing and helped fill slots which are short (not everyone can qualify) and freed up some guys to hopefully do the "guts and glory" work overseas. Don't rag her too hard...

I'm trying to help you Doc, I don't understand why you continue to attack me. When you use capital letters like THIS, it is perceived as yelling. This thread was a peaceful discussion about ribbons, it is about ribbons and only ribbons. You come on here and start talking about all those who have died for this country and get all worked up about it, to me, that is a sign of PTSD. I do not know you personally and I am not a doctor, but I got the sense that there is something deeper to your words- I have seen it in other threads as well. I'm trying to help you as I would any other Marine, therefore I don't understand why you keep attacking me.

No, the ribbon does not mean that much to me. I would gladly go on the frontlines if I ever had the opportunity. Just because some Marines are "ribbon-chasers" and take pride in their uniform and what they were on their chest, does not mean that we do not honor those who have given their lives for this country. These are two separate things that you are trying to combine. Yea it is nice to have ribbons, a symbol that we have done some good things for our country, but if that means that we forget those who have bleed/ died for this country then I am sure that every Marine would burn their ribbons.
