Wimunc case to be continued today

    A staff report

The two Marines charged in the death of 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc will not appear in court today.

Lawyer D.W. Bray, who represents Cpl. John Wimunc, said his client is not going to appear and the case will be continued to another date.

Wimunc is charged with murdering his estranged wife and setting fire to her apartment off Morganton Road in July. Lance Cpl. Kyle Alden is charged with aiding John Wimunc by destroying evidence and providing a false alibi.

Bray said the state regularly puts cases on the calendar to ensure they do not get lost or forgotten, as part of the county’s case management system. But the appearances don’t happen unless there is a matter that needs to be handled before a District Court judge, such as a bond reduction hearing or a probable cause hearing.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Marine corporal accused of killing his Army nurse wife won’t have his day in court until a grand jury indicts him in her death.

An attorney for Marine Cpl. John Wimunc said a hearing scheduled for Tuesday has been continued.

Wimunc is charged with first-degree murder and arson in the death of his wife, 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc, of Dubuque, Iowa.

The 24-year-old Holley Wimunc was found dead this summer in a wooded area near Camp Lejeune shortly after authorities found her Fayetteville apartment burned. She was a maternity ward nurse at Fort Bragg’s Womack Army Medical Center.

The court hearing of John Wimunc’s colleague, Lance Cpl. Kyle Alden, also was continued. Alden is charged with being an accessory to murder. He also is expected to be indicted.
