At JJ Carroll in September we had a rocket barrage that was a true indication of a full scale assault. As an artillery base of 175mm, we had to protect those guns. During this rocket 'rain' job, Fred V. Smith ran to the center of our AOR and returned under fire carrying two cases of beer like a waiter at a restaurant. He smelled the beer from a rocket landing near an Officers tent. We sang the Marine Corps Hymn and taunted the NVA all night with cat calls and other Marine choice words. Fred remains my HERO.
