    I always Wondered...

When did the The Corps adopt the M14s into the chevrons?

Are you sure bro? I always thought and I think I was told at one point that the crossed rifles were M14 Carbines.

One way is to backtrack to when the crossed rifles were added to the chevrons. The rifles on the chevrons are probably (my guess) based on the rifle in use at that time.

Do any of our Marines that were active duty, remember when the switch to chevrons with crossed rifles took place?

I think it was late 1949 or early 1960. Have a friend who got out some time in 1960 and he was in for the change. He was a E-4 Sgt. On the day of the change he was promoted to E-5 Sgt.

From what I could find it was 1959 when the Marine Corps moved to the new rank structure and crossed rifles were added. It coincided with the timeframe that the formal rank of Gunnery Sgt was re-instated which fell by the wayside in 1937. Technical Sergeants were referred to informally as "Gunny" during this time period.

    Pretty good sites:

....and the crossed rifles are M1 Garands.

The new rank structure was announced in Oct, 1958 with implementation starting in January 1959. When I was in Taiwan in '58 & '59 we had our first "crossed rifles" promotion to M/Sgt. M/Sgt William Wyatt is his name and the parade was held in Ping Tung in Feb/Mar 1959. My promotion to Sgt was 6/01/58 and I continued to wear the Sgt stripes until I departed active duty in Feb. 1960. Those of us that had the "old" rank structure were lovingly refered to as "Acting Sergeant" Mason. To which most of us replied, "stick the acting up your a$$".

The Corps was supposed to allow the old rank until sometime in late '60 or early '61. However, depending on the Command you might be attached to, you might not have had that long. I know of some S/Sgts (really hard core old school kinda Staffs) that were not allowed to go to the Staff NCO Club until they got their "crossed rifles" starting in 1960.

That concludes todays History Lesson. Class dismissed.
