Israel Brooks Jr. looked into the smiling white faces, and the former U.S. Marine felt fear. These ranking state highway patrolmen had come out to greet the first black man training to become one of them, in 1967. Brooks, then 23, knew the other recruits had not received the same treatment. He thought the special welcome would mean trouble from his fellow trainees.
