YOMP! IT'S A BOOTNECK THING!
OED: To walk or tread laboriously over rugged terrain.
Yomp, a word evocative of the Falklands Conflict, when members of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, yomped into position ready for battle, due to the loss of heavy lift helicopters in the 'Atlantic Conveyor'. Their training and fortitude exemplified the Commando spirit.

The link below will take you to a new website "Yomp30" dedicated to the Charity 30 miler. The event replicates the final Commando Test from Royal Marine training. The route starts at Okehampton in the NW corner of Dartmoor, and traverses the Moor through some of the most barren areas to the SE corner at Shipley Bridge.
The memories and stories of the 30 miler are legion, the photographs on the site display the rigours of the challenge. Eight hours is the time limit for recruits, carrying weapons and personal equipment weighing in at approximately 32 lbs.
On the 17th May 2003 a group of former/non-serving Royal Marines, supported by serving Bootnecks and a few ladies will attempt to relive their golden moments. Our aim is to finish within 12 hours. Considering our state of health, this should just about be achievable. We will be collecting sponsorship money to assist our comrades who suffer with PTSD; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This second site shows some of the countryside, the snow scenes were photographed in June! You can never trust the Moor, if you do it will bite your bum.
