Any advise for an infantry wannabe?

I've decided I want to join the infantry. Anyone with some words of wisdom? I'd really like to know what the training is like, how long it is, and where its at.

If anyone can help out it'd be appreciated. Thanks.

it all depends on the exact MOS of grunt you'll become... but it won't last longer that what? a month and a half.... it's changed a lot since I last looked into it.

Once you graduate boot camp, youll go to SOI. (School of Infantry). There you will learn to be a basic rifleman. Patrolling, Houseclearing, ambushes all the fun stuff. Youll play with all the weapon systems that are part of the infantry, machine guns, grenades, youll blow some s*it up , basically learning how to use the weapons.
Youll train hard, but its only a few weeks long so dont worry about it to much. Youll actually have alot of fun blowing sh*t up and shooting sh*t.

I served in the 1960's and 70's, but some things probably never change.

Now they have SOI (School of Infantry). When I went through, it was ITR (Infantry Training Regiment) and BITS (Basic Infantry Training School), followed by Counter-Guerilla Warfare School, for some of us 'more fortunate' ones.

Then you are a basic grunt, or a specialist, like I was (2533) operating with the grunts, after which there are advanced schools, which, back when I was in, were available only after your first combat tour, although you might get OJT (On the Job Training) in the field, and then sent to school to get up to speed on the finer points during your combat tour, when and where possible... thing get pretty 'ad hoc' during wartime.

Once you have all the school stuff out of the way, and have a combat tour under your belt, you are officially a Shooter, and your life is either Training, or Making War, as long as you are a member of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.

'Training for War' is what Grunts (and Marines in general) do, before, during, and after War.

Wars come and Wars go, but the training can never end, because as soon as it does, the Marines will lose their finely-tuned edge, and a Dull Marine is a Dead Marine.

Training is good, even for an Old Marine. I still train every day (except Sunday), and am able to pass the top level PFT requirements for my age group (59 years old).

PT... Good Stuff!

Everybody and their brother wants to go Infantry. Infantry has been talked about so much on here that NOBODY should have a question about it.

"This is my rifle this my gun!"

~ our beloved senior drill instructor, gunnery sgt hartman!!.

http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=29048

The above link is there for a reason! Read it and heed! Also Your signature is not a quote of your (as you are not a Marine) beloved Senior Drill Instructor, Gunnery Sgt Hartman! Besides he is fictional! That quote has been around since Moses was a CPL!

Having said that, now read the rules (use the link) then come back here and aplolgise to L/Cpl Marine84! Believe me, this is only gonna get worse until you do. I am being nice but the incoming Marines will eat you alive!

Ok Marines I have had my say, SIC EM!
