This is tragic...fallout from the war

The attached e-mail was forwarded to me by a friend of mine. Sadly it's a Mother's plea for her son who is a chit load of trouble. His name is Kyle Carney that was subjected to 3 combat tours. I'm beginging to hear more of these horror stories surfacing. All this rhetoric from politicians (choose a side of the aisle) and no hue and cry for our returning Vets.

Here's the e-mail that was forwarded:

OK, girls, this is what is going on, his mom belongs to my ptsd group, her son is a marine he is in jail for attempted murder, he has full blown ptsd & maybe tbi, I am sending you a copy of her email to me, so you will understand, what I need is people to send letters to the prosecutor & the judge to ask for leniency & anything else you can think of I would appreciate you letting me know, he is a 3 time Iraq war vet, this kid is going to go to jail for a long, long time, she does not have a lot of money for an attorney, she is a single parent, she hired an attorney who said he would take the case on for a certain amount now he is saying he needs more money & she does not have it. Also if you could send letters to kyle in jail to tell him to hang on we are trying & praying for him that would be great. But do not give out the information online unless it is to someone you know or the moms private phone number, ok, let me know please what you decide, as I am still searching for help for him. also it would be nice if we could find a mom to go to court with her so she is not all by herself

As it turns out from speaking with the attorney, he was able to get the 2nd police report,
and it actually says on the police report that he never saw my son with a gun or a gun pointed at him...all he saw was a flash.

Then towards the end of the report...he says, "but I am sure he was trying to kill me."

This young man had been out of the academy 2 weeks.
The attorney said getting letters from the Blue Star Moms would be okay, he said they would be effective to send to the prosecutor.

Here are some facts about my son.
    He was honorably discharged
Served 3 tour of Duties in IRAQ (USMC)
    Honorably Discharged December 2006.
Came home to OK Jan 2007
Was working full-time, going to school part-time in the morning.
He was Cleet Certified in OK in April of 2007 (4 month training program should they want to go on and become a Police) he graduated
I noticed a diference in him the 3rd time he came back from Iraq.
I called a counselor with the VA(Dr. Taylor) in May of 2007
I asked the counselor what I could do for my some since he seemed to me to be struggling with the PTSD.
I talked with the girlfriend and the Mom in the same month of May.
It was in November of 2007 November 26, 2007 at 4:30 am I got a call that my son was wounded somewhere near the Arkansas River...and that he had crashed his truck going 100 miles an hour into a power poll...and supposedly shot at police.

It all started when he broke up with his girlfriend. They had dated about a year and half.
He went over to his ex-girlfriends one evening after work to get the rest of his things sinc e he had already been moved out a month. His girlfriend came to the door, she had another guy in there...the guy came to the door, they got into some words...the guy slammed the door in his face....they lawyer said that triggered my son...and at that moment he became a soldier again.

The young man said that my son tried to kill him, took him outside, but my son missed, and he got away...the young man called the police...the police started to chase my son.

the lawyer made this point to me...Kyle is an expert shot...Marine Corps and Cleet Training, if he tried to kill the young man ...he would have done it.
the ex-girlfriend did not see this take place, she stayed in side.

These are the facts that I can share.

So supposedly my son tried to shoot the young man, and tried to shoot the police.
the police report does not say that any other police saw him with a gun or that he tried to shoot at anyone personally.
The one officer said, "he saw a flash"

My sons bond is$ 265,000....so it would take 26,000 to get him out of jail at this point.
He has been in jail since November 26.

He goes for his competency test March 7.

Jail is really starting to bother him right now.
He loves to be outdoors, and rarely does he get to go outside.

    Here is the Prosecutor address:

    Scott Gengres
    500 S. Denver Ste 900
    Tulsa Ok 74103

    918-596-4853

    Here is the Judge Name

    Judge Tom Gillert
    Tulsa County Court House
    500 S. Denver Ste 900
    Tulsa OK 74103

    Kyle's mailing:

Chaz3, your profile says your occupation is sheriff.

What is your take on this?

Do you really want him free to be in YOUR neighborhood? I sure don't.

This young man may need help but he doesn't need to be free to terrorize the local police and populace like it says he did in your post. He has some major problems that need to be addressed and maybe the courts will get him the help he so desperately seems to need.

PTSD could be just a scapegoat so he doesn't have to take responsibility for his misdeeds. If he was diagnosed with "full blown ptsd" then why wasn't he getting treatment? (no mention of that in the post) It seems if he in fact had PTSD that he would be undergoing treatment and be on meds for it. I choose to be very very skeptical of this because there just isn't enough information here to make a judgement as to whether this man should be treated in any way other than the way he is being currently treated by the legal system...

I guess I could say I'm undecided. I have four brothers-in-law who saw combat in Korea. One was one of seven men out of an entire platoon who made it back off of Porkchop Hill, and he was shot all to h***. After recovering from his wounds, he went on to live a peaceful, productive civilian life. None of the four ever showed signs of PTSD. They came home from the war and went back to work as civilians.

My wife also had two older cousins who saw combat in WWII. One earned the Bronze Star as an Army 1st Lieutenant in Germany during action in the Black Forest. Both simply went back to normal, productive lives as civilians after the war.

On the other hand, a 15 year-old great niece of ours was raped by an illegal Mexican, who then disappeared back into the illegal Mexican community. (There is a packing plant nearby). Her older brother got drunk, "lost it" and went after anyone who looked Mexican. When the police got after him, he led the police on a classic 100 mph chase that ended when he wrecked his pickup. He wound up spending 90 days in the slammer. He's also never been in the military.

My gut feeling is that the term PTSD didn't become popular until the country became overrun with psychiatrists and psychologists trying to make a living. After WWII and Korea there were veterans who came home with altered personalities and were referred to as "shell-shocked". For the most part, however, they were harmless, and people simply tolerated any idiosyncracies they may have exhibited.

As I said, I'm undecided, but I suspect PTSD is blamed for a lot of rampages that would have occurred anyway. It would appear there is an unidentifiable fine line in there somewhere.

I am the ex girlfriend. I have never responded to any of these sites but I think it is time to defend myself. Reading all these lies makes me sick to my stomach. First of all none of these sites or blogs mentions the numerous times the police had to get involved during our relationship because Kyle use to brutally put his hands on me while we were together. We broke Up the beginning of Oct in 2007 and this occasion happened the end of Nov 2007. Nearly 2 months after he moved out and had ALL of his belongings moved out. In that two months Kyle would sit across the street from my job and sit outside my house threatening me and stalking me. So I had a close friend (So called, New Boyfriend) come stay with me because I didn’t feel safe. This blog states that one evening Kyle came over to collect some belongings. Wow, he had nothing at my house and it was 2am in the morning. It also states that Kyle was triggered to pull a gun because the door was slammed in his face. I heard a gun cock before anyone even answered the door. I told my friend to just not answer it and he will leave. My friend insisted and said that he would just tell him to go away. When he answered the door there was a gun pointed in his face. So yes, he did slam the door closed and attempted to lock the door when Kyle successfully kicked it in and held us both at gun point. This blog also leaves out that Kyle was very drunk. He could barely stand up straight and was slurring all his words. It was very clear that he was not sober and not in his right state of mind. After a while of trying to calm him down and arguing with him he then forced my friend outside with the gun to the back of his head. When they reached the courtyard of the apartments Kyle took 7 shots at my friend at point blank range. Yes he did miss every shot. But did I mention Kyle was drunk???? My friend ducked and ran for his life. Kyle then attempted to run from the cops in a high speed chase. When wrecking his truck he then ran on foot shooting at the cops. He hid for hours while swap teams, K-9 units and Tulsa PD looked for him. For months after this occasion I was scared for my life. Even knowing he was locked up and not getting out for a while I was looking over my shoulder everywhere I went. His mother also never mentions that just a few weeks before we broke up and he moved out that she came over one day while Kyle was at school. She was very scared and starting frantically rummaging through my home gathering all our kitchen knives and anything he could harm me with. During that visit she begged for me to leave and move out because she kept repeating that he was going to KILL ME. That very same occasion the police had to come escort her out of my home. But as she says, he is innocent right? She also keeps stating that he has PTSD, she starting claiming this before that night even happened and he got put in his jail. Kyle never once went to counseling or to get a Doctors professional opinion. This man is not safe and needs severe help. Yes he left the Marine Corps with a honorable discharge and I loved him dearly. But disturbed people walk among us every day. I lived in fear for months with him. I was scared everyday to come home because I knew he was going to be drunk and attack me as soon as I walked in the door. And I still live my life in fear to this day from all the desperate attempts his mothers makes to prove his innocence and to get him released from prison earlier. I hope that everyone reads this and remembers that there is always two sides to every story. And the so called innocent isn’t always innocent. There is a reason he got served 25 years. Would you like a man like this dating your daughter or sister and the next thing you know she is trapped and has to go through so much struggle to get out just to live life in fear forever?????????????>>

Me thinks the truth is somewhere in the middle between these two stories...which doesn't take away that fact that he did three tours.

Our older generations have made the these younger vets feel unwelcome at the traditional places to talk out war issues and drink--the legion and VFW halls.

I blame Bush and Obama even more. Billions for their Ivy League war contractor buddies, and crap for the vet programs. Hell, Bush denied a few hundred million to double the planned expansion of the vet mental health clinics, the same quarter he sent his daughter to Central America to purchase a family ranch the size of Rhode Island.

You've got to be kidding me. So many of us have PTSD, but we aren't running around shooting at people. Don't use PTSD as a scapegoat.

    There are issues here....big time.

As someone who has been diagnosed with PTSD I can say it's something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

That having been said....it's still about FREE WILL. Just because crap happens doesn't mean you blame it on PTSD. Hells bells.

I feel for the mom. I even, in some ways, feel for the guy.

But, dammit, you know right from wrong.

I tend to agree. I have not slept through an entire night since I got back from my Iraq tour that included BIAP and "MORTARITAVILLE" BALAD in 2003-2004. Like the other guy said, "the truth lies somewhere in the middle". After I got back from Iraq and my wife asked for a divorce and the new contract was signed in the house we had built while I was gone, there were plenty of thoughts of doing stupid ****. I did not. It's OK to think about it, but carrying those actions out is the difference.
