Gold Jump Wings after how many jumps?

I am not a Recon Marine, nor do I play one on TV. I talked to a guy in the 82nd. He said that Marines get Gold Jump Wings after five jumps-the standard for Airborne school, right? I said, no, I think it's more than that. Twenty jumps sounds more like it to me. But, he was insistent. Who is right?

The right to wear the Navy and Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia (also known as the Naval Parachutist Insignia) is a gold embroidered or gold metal winged pin with a gold open parachute in the center. Enlisted personnel and officers are authorized for those members who have previously qualified for the Basic Parachutist Insignia; have, under competent orders, completed a minimum of five additional static-line or P3 jumps.

Basic Airborne is 5 jumps, but you also have to be in a jump billet to get the gold jump wings. After you earn the led sled, you can have as many additional jumps as you can get but if you are not in a jump billet then your wings will stay closed, or silver.

That's another little, but important detail ole FIST brought out, when you get your 10 you get the gold jump wings but more importantly you get your jump status up and the best part the jump pay!

And now that I've been thinking about it, I think you have to do more then 5 additional static jumps for gold wings. I know you need 5 more but I think you have to do a night jump at high altitude, and a mixture of HALO, and HAHO's during the day before you go gold but maybe someone else can confirm that? I just have a led sled, I'm a 5 jump chump.

LOL. Five additional jumps of any kind were the requirement when I was doing this, AND the Marine HAS to be on jump status at the time. You can get a hundred other jumps but if you aren't on 'status' you don't rate the gold wings.

Ok, here's the straight scoop on what earns you the Navy/Marine Corps Parachute Insignia (and yes, you do get paid while in a jump billet even if you only have your lead sled):

(Exerpt from MCO3500.20B)

7. Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia. Marines may wear the
Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia when they have completed
a USMC approved basic airborne course and fulfilled either of the following
requirements. This is not waiverable:

a. Marines, while assigned to an authorized T/O parachuting billet for a
period of no less than 90 days, have the required swim qualification and
must complete five additional jumps. The five additional jumps must include
at least two combat equipment day jumps, two combat equipment night
jumps, and employ two or more types of military aircraft.

b. Marines with prior service in another branch of the U.S. Armed Forces
who has been assigned to an authorized (assigned by orders/receiving pay)
parachuting billet, and who fulfills the Marine Corps criteria regarding the
number, type, and frequency of parachute jumps listed above, is authorized
to wear the Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia.

c. Complete one combat jump of any kind from any aircraft, whether or not
in an authorized Navy/Marine Corps T/O billet.

Notice it says, this is not waiverable. If any unit out there is awarding gold wings without meeting these requirements, they aren't doing it right.
