Marines take a few good dogs
By Jan A. Igoe

Carolina Canines for Service, Inc., has launched a pilot program at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., where a team of inmates will train service dogs for Marines who’ve been injured in combat.

Two of the dogs now training at Lejeune were rescued from Horry County Humane Society and raised by local families who fostered the pups for 20 months. They attended training classes at the Grand Strand Senior Center and provided early socialization for the Labradors, Adam and Eve. When fully trained, the dogs will be able to perform about 70 tasks to assist a Marine with a disability.
