McALLEN, Texas — A former Marine must serve two years in prison for sending threatening e-mails to an FBI agent.

A federal judge in McAllen on Thursday sentenced 29-year-old Ramiro S. Vargas Jr. of Alamo.

After prison, Vargas is barred from subscribing to an e-mail provider during three years of supervised release.

A jury in October convicted Vargas of sending a death threat on Sept. 15, 2006, via an FBI tip line.

Vargas was honorably discharged after being hurt during a 2003 bar fight in which he and other Marines were assaulted.

Vargas sought to assist the FBI, then wanted the agent to help him in his civil suit over the fight and in a criminal case against him.

Prosecutors say Vargas sent many threats to the agent. Her name has not been released.
