    MOS Assignment

I was wondering how exactly you get your specific MOS. I know that if you sign as a 1300 you'll end up as some sort of Engineer, however how would I secure being a 1371-Combat Engineer over a 1391-Bulk Fuel specialist?

I am currently signed for 0200/2600, however I have been reading up more and more on it, and I'd rather not sit in a dark, windowless tent all day reading and typing. I am thinking of switching contract to a 1300, being a Combat Engineer really sounds like a ton of a fun, however I don't want to sign it and end up as some bumpkin job welding or fix tanks all day.

In a few hours I'm going to talk to my recruiter, so if you guys could give me some quick answers I would be much obliged.

    Here's the scoop...brace yourself.

You go to MCT, one day you will sit down and the SNCOIC will call off everyone's name and tell them what their MOS is.

The way it's picked? Needs of the Corps (get used to hearing that).

Alot of the earlier days in MCT will be spent by you and your fellow Marines wondering about what job you're getting. The wait sucks!

You could always move to an area that has a reserve unit with the MOS you want, and then enlist as a reservist. Other than that, it is the luck of the draw.

Your recruiter has a dart board and the thrower wears a blindfold and they take fifteen paces and throw and where it lands nobody knows. And that is how you get your MOS!

There is nothing wrong with being a bumpkin....especially if you are a Marine bumpkin!

To answer your original question I believe it would be determined in your MOS school and the needs of the Marine Corps. I didn't have that problem I was told I was going to be a grunt and that's what I was trained as,and I said yes sir!.

Your recruiter should be able to give you all the information you want. Be sure to ask him where his dart board is. Usually on the hatch to the supply closet.Good luck!!

    Thanks!

How common is it to get assigned to a 1371? I just don't want to be changing my MOS and then biting myself in the *** because I didn't get what I wanted.

What's wrong with being a bulk fuel specialist? lol

Anyway, my boyfriend was promised 1371, but he got to MCT and they told him he was a 1361. So, I really don't know.

You usually get in the general area of what you sign up for. Don't do the buddy program or anything like that! There are too many variables involved. I
did the buddy program with a guy who didn't make it through boot camp. It turns out that I didn't have the math classes I needed for the MOS I signed up for in high school and was randomly assigned as a 3521, Motor T mechanic. Luckily I had a high ASVAB score (86 AFQT 119 GT) and was able to get into another MOS down the road.
