Camp Pendleton Marine dies in Iraq

CAMP PENDLETON -- The Defense Department on Tuesday announced the death of a Camp Pendleton Marine who died in what was described only as a "nonhostile" incident.

Lance Cpl. Lance M. Clark, 21, a native of Cookeville, Tenn., died Friday in the Anbar province west of Baghdad in an incident that is under investigation.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton.


Clark is one of at least 344 locally based Marines to die in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. In all, at least 3,762 U.S. service members have died in the Iraq war.

Marine's body to return to Cookeville on Wednesday

WHITE COUNTY -- The body of a U.S. Marine from Cookeville who was killed in Iraq is expected to return home tomorrow, and friends of his family are asking that the community welcome him home.
Lance Cpl. Lance Murphy Clark, 21, died in southern Iraq Sept. 7. His body is expected to be flown from the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport in White County sometime tomorrow.

Officials with Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home in Cookeville are handling Lance Cpl. Clark's funeral arrangements, which were still incomplete as of this morning.

Those who wish to pay their respects to the Marine who lost his life in Iraq may line the streets between the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport and the Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home at 59 N. Jefferson Ave.

The exact time of Lance Cpl. Clark's arrival at the funeral home tomorrow is expected to be listed later today on the funeral home's Web site at www.hhhfunerals.com.

Lance Cpl. Clark, who would have turned 22 on Dec. 5, graduated from Cookeville High School in 2004 and joined the U.S. Marines in April of 2005. This was his second tour of duty in Iraq.

Lance Cpl. Clark's parents are John Dale and Susie Scott of Cookeville and Jackie and Pam Clark of Chestnut Mound.
