Tank battle seen as start of real war
When the U.S. and Iraqi Republican Guard divisions tangle south of Baghdad, probably in the next day or two, analysts say the world could witness one of the biggest tank battles since World War II.
The battle, which experts have said could be the start of the pivotal military action of the war, comes after U.S. forces swept 350 miles from Kuwait north into the heart of Iraq less than 100 miles from Baghdad.
"The real war starts now," Patrick Garrett, a military analyst at GlobalSecurity.org, said Wednesday.
In the 1991 war, the Iraqis' poor use of tank tactics contributed to their massive losses, but some experts think they have learned some lessons.
