Lightbulb What's a Well Educated Person?

I'm taking a class at the University and we had to read
this article on what the characterstics of an educated person
are so I just thought I'd share because I found it all very
    interesting.

    1) They are seekers of the truth.

    2) Their prespective should extend over the past, the present
    and the future.

    3) They are citizens of the world as well as of the United States.

    4) They should have achieved a firm moral base embodying
at least a sense of vocation, a deep concern for human
betterment, the obligation of service to others, social responsiblity,
equality among persons, and loyalty to the truth.

    5) They should be able to have thought in a mature way about
the ultimate meaning of human existence.

    6) They should have delved in some depth into a particular field
    of study.

    7) They should have had sufficient experience in interpersonal
relationships to enable them to get along with others persons
with civility, tact and finesse, to be constructive members of
groups and organizations, and to be good companions.

    8) They should be self reliant and self supporting.

    9) They should have the capacity and desire to learn throughtout
    their lives.

    10) They should have developed their bodies as well as their
intellects and achieved rapport with nature.

    11) They should be prepared to live interesting and fullfilling lives
as the human condition and individual fortunes might permit.

DANG, it takes way too much to be well-educated....LOL!
No wonder they say "The older, the wiser" takes you a whole
    damn lifetime...LOL...I'm getting there though

    Thumbs up Educated Quote

    LadyLeatherneck, Here's one I thought you’d like

"They (Women Marines) don't have a nickname, and they don't need one. They get their basic training in a Marine atmosphere, at a Marine Post. They inherit the traditions of the Marines. They are Marines."

(Lieutenant General Thomas Holcomb, USMC 1943.)

My Hat's off to all Women Marines!

    Semper Fi,
    Bob

    Education

The Science of Government it is my Duty to study, more than all other Sciences; the Art of Legislation and Administration and Negotiation, ought to take Place, indeed to exclude in a manner all other Arts. --I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Mathematicks and Philosophy. My sons ought to study Mathematicks and Philosophy, Geography, natural History, Naval Architecture, navigation, Commerce and Agriculture, in order to give their Children a right to study Painting, Poetry, Musick, Architecture, Statuary, Tapestry and Porcelaine.

John Adams, letter to Abigail Adams 12 May 1780

Education, then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men, - the balance-wheel of the social machinery.

Horace Mann, twelfthe annual report to the Massachusetts State Board of Education, 1848

    Wink A Well Educated Person

The idea of a well educated person comes from data which relate to one's perception, and our ideas about what it means to be well educated.

Progress in our education generally means sharpening the divisions between private/ public, subjective/objective, and emotional/ rational aspects of our lives.

    Some have this idea of what a well educated person is;
"A well educated person is a man in a suit who talks with a posh accent. He goes to work with a brief case, earns good money, lives in a detached house and drives a smart car".

Interests, achievements and social status are representations of people who were well educated.

People come to relate the idea of being well educated to their own experience.

So an analysis of our lifes might give us an idea of what a well educated person is.

An educated person holds multiple ideas in mind at once, looks inward as well as outward, sees with a heart and a mind, acts and reflects.

Martin Buber wrote: "Education worthy of the name is essentially education of character."

    Now a question;
"Does being well educated translates to being a happy person?"

Some very successful people are miserable people to live with.
They are driven to achieve their goals that they lose touch with what's real.

Some people have been very successful with little or no education.

    Now this...
A well-educated person needs the following skills:

--the ability to engage anyone in conversation who is not pedantic.

--the ability to appreciate the skills of all types of labor--and the breeding to appreciate their contributions to the smooth running of any society--i.e., don't disrespect your garbage collector.

--an appreciation and faith in a higher being--familiarity with the writings describing said faith.

--respect for elders--you can never say Ma'am or Sir too often.

--the ability to listen to conversation.

--table manners--at home and in public.

--understanding of fashion for you--what you look good in and can afford.

--the class and confidence to ask a question when you are confused or don't understand an issue.

--a basic exposure to music, art, basic architecture, principles of science, economics, government and one foreign language.

--writing in a coherent and interesting fashion.

    --balancing a checkbook.

--ability to invest your savings in a profitable pension account.

--the wisdom to hire a trustworthy lawyer for a will and an accountant for your annual payment to the IRS.

--know how to buy a car, rent an apartment, book a vacation and pick your doctors.

--the strength to walk away from destructive relationships--all types.

--know how many drinks you can consume before you say stupid things to strangers.

    --ability to say, "Thank you".

--the education and confidence to be able to walk away from a career you hate and still be able to support yourself and your dependents.

Well that should give us an understanding of what a "Well educated person."
