Marines to lead parade

GRAND RAPIDS -- The Grand Rapids Jaycees have chosen Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines to lead the fourth-annual Patriot Day Parade. The group will serve as grand marshals for the Sept. 8 festivities. The unit is based at the U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Grand Rapids and returned home in April after a seven-month tour in Iraq. While there, they lost four Marines -- Sgt. Thomas Gilbert, Cpl. Jacob Neal, Lance Cpl. Jonathan Thornsberry and Pfc. Brett Witteveen. For more on the parade, visit or call 954-9409.
