LONDON — Military police are investigating what a newspaper described as an alleged sexual assault on a parachute regiment recruit that was filmed using a mobile telephone, the Defence Ministry said Tuesday.

A two-minute video shows the recruit being held down while another man allegedly tries to sexually assault him, The Sun newspaper reported.

“We can confirm an alleged incident recorded on a mobile phone is being investigated,” a Defence Ministry spokesman said on condition of anonymity in line with government policy. He would not comment on the allegations

A soldier’s mother reported the alleged attack to military police after her son showed her the video, which soldiers at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire had been circulating on their phones, the newspaper reported.

At the end of the footage, the recruit is shown curled on a bed up half-naked crying, the Sun said. At least six men are shown either joining the alleged assault or jeering, the newspaper said.
