A UH-1N Huey helicopter with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 264 crashed Monday while training in Kenya, leaving six service members with “non-threatening injuries,” according to a statement released by the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The crash occurred near Manda Bay, Kenya, and the injured service members were treated aboard the amphibious assault ship Bataan, the release said. The Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based MEU is training with Kenyan armed forces for Exercise Edged Mallet.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, the release said.

The condition of the helicopter, along with details on the service members, including their nationality, were not initially released.

Six members of the military were
rescued and two were treated for minor injuries after a Marine
helicopter based in North Carolina crashed in Kenya.
The Marine Corps said that the crash occurred near Manda
Bay, Kenya, where members of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit
were taking part in an exercise with the Kenyan military. The
personnel were taken to the U-S-S Bataan.
Officials said the U-H-1-N Huey was from Marine Medium
Helicopter Squadron 264, which is based at Marine Corps Air Station
New River, next to Camp Lejeune.
It was assigned to the 26th MEU, which left North Carolina in
January.
The cause of the accident is being investigated.

Investigation underway in Huey crash

A UH-1N Huey with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 264 was “heavily damaged” in a crash in Kenya that injured two service members, according to a spokesman with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Six crew members were aboard the Huey when it crashed near Manda Bay, Kenya, MEU spokesman Capt. Will Klumpp said in an e-mail response to questions. Two were treated aboard the amphibious assault ship Bataan for nonlife-threatening injuries, according to a March 5 MEU release.

The Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based MEU is training with Kenyan armed forces during Exercise Edged Mallet.

An investigation into the crash is underway, Klumpp said. It is unclear how many of the crew members were Marines.
