VietNam: Class of 1970-71 and 1975

USMC 1970-74. Went to Nam 1970-71.....
    H & S Co. 3/5, Mortarman 60mm/81mm (Queson Valley/FSB Ross)
    H & S Co. 3/1 Mortars (QuangTri Providence, Hill 190)

Left the Corps in 1974 and went into the Navy to become a Navy Corpman. Went aboard the USS Hancock, CVA-19 in Dec. 1974 and went back to Nam for the Operation Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. The last two Marines to die in the Viet Nam war were two pilots on a CH-46 from our carrier. They were Marine Captain William C. Nystul, and his co-pilot, Marine 1st Lieutenant Michael J. Shea. The Crewchiefs survived the crash, but were seriously injured. The whole story is in "Jakes Hancock" site. They were Marine Corporals Stephen R. Wills and Richard L. Scott. I was one of the corpman who took care of them.
I retired in 1992 as an HM1 from the Naval Reserves. Was called to active duty for Desert Storm prior to retiring.
Proud to have served my beloved Corps as Combat Marine and as Corpman.
Semper Fi, from " Short Round" ( I don't remember ever having a short round....I was nick named that because I was 5'3" tall) and " Doc", two nick names I cherish with great honor!

PS. One of my worst memories "in" country as a Marine was the day that an OV-10 was hit and crashed about 300 meters from where we had just bedded down after humping our asses off. I remember them too....I will always remember that day. That account is in the Marine Combat Helicopter site.

    Nam

Dong Ha Project 972 from the sand ramp to the mouth of the river at kau- viet up the beach to dmz, then points all across to the other rice burners border. Doc, all Marines who's been there, done that and will never forget, all Navy Corpsman was a doc. Only difference between you and I was the rank insignia, everyone was green and considered a Marine. Semper Fi!
