The commandant has announced that Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent will be the next sergeant major of the Marine Corps.

Commandant Gen. James Conway made the announcement during a command visit to Camp Pendleton, Calif. Kent is the senior enlisted Marine with I Marine Expeditionary Force.

Kent will replace Sgt. Maj. John Estrada, who has held the Corps’ top enlisted spot since June 2003.

The new sergeant major is a “known quantity” to Conway because he has been I MEF’s senior enlisted Marine since Conway commanded that unit in Iraq in 2004, said Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Thompson, who served above Kent as sergeant major of Marine Corps Forces Pacific until beginning terminal leave last month.

Thompson described Kent as “an advocate” for junior Marines and “a war fighter from the word go.”

Read more about Kent in Monday’s edition of Marine Corps Times.
