JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.-based squadron of EA-6B Prowlers deployed to Al Asad, Iraq, on Friday.
More than 30 Marines with Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 1 left the headquarters of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing for a seven-month deployment.
“Our mission in the global war on terrorism is to support the troops on the ground,” Lt. Col. Ronald Neff, squadron commanding officer, said in a press release. “Our guys are motivated, and they are going to do a great job.”
He said this deployment marks the first for about half of the Marines in the squadron.
The squadron’s role in Iraq will include supporting raids, convoys and counterinsurgency operations. VMAQ-1 Marines are taking over missions previously conducted by VMAQ-3, which also is based at Cherry Point
