Liam set to march in his father's footsteps

AN ELITE commando force has gained one of its newest recruits from Burbage.
Liam Taylor, 19, was presented with his green beret, the Royal Marine's hallmark, after a gruelling 32-week training programme.

The former Buxton Community College pupil said: "It was the hardest thing I have ever done, but when you succeed it all feels worthwhile."

Of the 58 trainees who started in Liam's troop, only 12 managed to complete the physically and mentally demanding course.

Liam's dad, Stephen, who was also in the Marines, said: "I think he used to like my stories. It was something he always wanted to do and he went for it."

He said Liam hopes to become a mountain leader, specialising in climbing and cliff assaults.

Liam's mum, Jayne said: "We are extremely proud of him. Liam has always been very active and outdoorsy, so this was just a natural progression.

"I think it all started at school because they were very good at taking them on orienteering expeditions.

"I am excited for him and apprehensive in the same breath because his first tour will be in the new year."

Since completing his initial training Liam has spent a month in Wales on mountain exercise and preparing to go on tour.

Mrs Taylor said: "I think it will be a culture shock for him, but he is really keen to get on and do the job."

The passing out ceremony was held at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, Devon.

Royal Marines are currently deployed around the globe supporting United Nations, NATO and British interests.
This includes Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq.
