When I was a teenager, there was an elderly lady in my neighborhood who had a placard in her window, with three gold stars on it. I asked her about it, and she related it was in rememberance of her three sons who died in WW II. She said even after 25 yrs., she still missed her sons. But she also said she was glad they went to fight, and that if it was necessary for them to die in defense of our freedoms...that was okay. They died for a good cause.
I remember asking if she had any other 'kids.' She said, "No, but if I did, and they went to war, and they died too....well, that's just what it takes sometimes.
