NASCAR fans were treated to some special Marine Corps sights in addition to
witnessing two races last weekend at Daytona International Speedway,
Florida. At the Busch Series race Friday night, following a presentation by
the Blue Star Mothers, 6th Marine Corps District Musician Technical
Assistant, SSgt. Mitch Martin performed "God Bless America" on trumpet prior
to the race's start. Marines were shown on camera during the National
Anthem and opening ceremonies as has been customary at all races. The
following night, more than 150 Marines unfurled a giant American Flag as
part of opening ceremonies for the Winston Cup event. The Silent Drill
Platoon also performed at the event and Major Roseanne Sgrignoli sang
"America The Beautiful." A group of Marine Cobra Attack Helicopters
provided a fly-over to conclude the Pepsi 400 race ceremonies. There was
tremendous reaction from the crowd in attendance for the Marine Corps
participation at the events.
