MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C.(Aug. 3, 2006) -- Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 held a field meet and family day, Friday, to relax and build camaraderie.

"It gives us the opportunity to show family appreciation, have fun and dunk our leadership in water," said Lt. Col. Roger L. Stone, the MWCS-28 commanding officer. "Young Marines can have fun like young Marines and include their families. I think it’s great and I’m proud to see the Marines put this on in the heat."

The event consisted of a tug-of-war, seven-ton truck pull, "dizzy izzy" race and a push-up contest.

A variety of food such as hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken was provided by Marine Corps Community Services.

One of the features at the event was a mini boot camp for the younger children, in which they ran a short obstacle course which ended with throwing a water balloon at a Marine.

The family day also included a dunking tank and an inflatable pugil stick arena, which were also provided by MCCS.

To determine who was going to be the victim of the dunking tank, all of the Marines were given an opportunity to vote for someone.

"It’s a lot of fun," said Cpl. Roosevelt Thompson, the administration chief for MWCS-28. "A lot of the time families don’t know we can have fun, so it’s good for them to see us laugh and play around."

Another purpose of the event is to give the families of the Marines an opportunity to come on station and meet new people.

"It’s good to get the families together and meet the people we work with," said Sgt. Jeffery Davis, an electronic maintenance technician at MWCS-28.

Stone said, he looks forward to another field meet in the future.
