Okinawa Cell Phones

I'm got orders to Okinawa and I currently have a Verizon phone and was wondering what cell phone companies work there and what kind of extra charges am I looking at?

And before I go there is there anything else i need to bring there that i wouldnt normally bring elsewhere?

Im still kind of confused, what do most Marines over there use?

Get some snorkel gear Kin blue beach is the bomb and suntan lotion , dont eat puffer fish , crabs or anything (we almost did like dumb asses very poisonous) but most of that stuff you can get in Oki any how . Its been a while since I was on Okinawa (5 years), but plenty of Marines had cell phone plans when I was there. Call Verizon and find out if the phone will work over there. The point of the link that Phantom posted is that the technology in a US phone probably will not work in Japan. Unless you have a car, which you won't, then you can probably live without a cellphone. Nevertheless, if you absolutely must have one, they are available. There are places off base where you can get one.

In fact, the first cell phone I ever got was given to me by a Marine that arrived in Okinawa and discovered that his phone didn't work. I was rotating off the island. I think I traded him a TV, ironing board, and iron for his cell phone. Then I connected the service when I got back to the states. Now I'm still stuck with Sprint. Oh well...I think he wound up getting a cell phone off base or something.

I was there for 3 years and I hardly used the phone line in my room. If you want to call home, it is probably cheaper to use the Internet to talk.

You don't need to take anything over there that you can't fit into a sea bag. Most Marines purchase cheap stuff when they get over there (TV, DVD, etc.) Take your uniforms, records, and some civis. If you have a lap top, then obviously take that. Otherwise, you can get a computer or have someone ship your desktop to you. Like Hocker said, you can get all the diving gear you want when you get there. Good luck, stay out of trouble over there, but have a good time...do some diving, save some money, take some classes, whatever you gotta do.

I don't know either but it makes sense to me that they use Cellular Abroad.May try calling Verizon and ask them.

If all else fails a calling card and payphone works. Maybe a stamp and envelope....

Dont you guys get those secret phone codes any more? dail in the code then your number for free service. Some one in our unit always had one ,times must have changed . Like PB said stamp and a envelope or a phone center.

no your cell phone wont work over there i was there I had to buy one their phone and open up a plan i think i had at&t while i was there I got the plan on base
