Dover Naval reservist is Sailor of the Year
Beacon Journal staff report
A Dover Naval reservist and corpsman who served in Iraq with Akron Marine reservists last year was selected as the U.S. Navy Reserve Sailor of the Year.
Hospital Corpsman 1st Class David Worrell trains with Weapons Company of 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines at the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center on Dan Street in Akron.
Worrell was chosen from five finalists and 43,000 enlisted Navy reservists.
Worrell, 33, works as a phlebotomy supervisor at Union Hospital in Dover and has been in the Naval Reserve since 1998.
While in Iraq with the Navy Operational Support Center, he set up temporary medical aid stations, repeatedly participated in patrols that came under attack from insurgents, helped look for roadside bombs and rendered first aid to dozens of wounded Marines.
He is to be promoted to chief petty officer this summer.
