It was a nickname given to the Marines by German soldiers during WW1, because they were fighting like devil dogs. The german is "teufelhund" or something like that .

There are 13 stripes on the flag to represent the original 13 colonies/states.

Dan Dailey won two Medals of Honor, who is the only other Marine to get two?

BTW, when you get to your first unit, ask one of the gunnies if you'll be getting issued a prick-E7.

I thought it was that on the 7th day, when god rested, the Marines stole the Eagle from the AF, the Rope from the Army, the anchor from the Navy, and overran God's perimeter and stole the world.

In early times, it was customary for a ship entering a friendly port to discharge its broadsides to demonstrate that they were unloaded; eventually it became a British practice to fire a seven-gun salute. The forts ashore would fire three shots for each shot fired afloat.

In the United States, the 21-gun salute is used as a Presidential Salute as well as a Salute to the Nation when fired at noon on Memorial Day -- a 50-gun salute is fired at noon on the 4th of July. The 21-gun salute is not to be confused with the 3-volley salute using rifles for most military servicemembers or shotguns for police officers at their funerals.

the third one is the best

A very interesting thing related to the 21 gun salute. The men who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier take 21 steps, and stand for 21 seconds at each end of their walk in representation of this high honor.
