Cool KOREA DEFENSE SERVICE (Cease-fire duty)

    The Bill's Basic Points

    A) A campaign medal (Army Occupation Medal) was conferred for 10 years (9 May 1945 to 5 May 1955) to those who served in a similar defense operation in Cold War West Germany and 45 years to West Berlin (9 May 1945 to 2 Oct 1990).

    B) Korea Defense service is one of only two official combat zones (per Army Times, Internet, 06-17-96) where military personnel currently serve, the other being the Persian Gulf in which personnel have received the Southwest Asia Service Medal from 2 Aug 1990 to 30 Nov 1995 and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal thereafter.

    C) Since 1954, at least 1,500 U.S. Dead as a direct result of their service and over 40,479 hostile incidents (breaches to the cease-fire) occurred.

    D) Support for a service medal to current and former members deployed to Korea is expressed by current Commander in Chief, U.S. Forces Korea, General Thomas Schwartz.
