i am going into the marines but my recruiter is letting me pick any job i want and i was woundering if anyone could give me alittle info on the job of mp

Try this if you want to be an MP. Go stand by the drive thru at McDonalds and salute cars as they drive by. Then go give your friends tickets that dont mean anything.

Not trying to knock on MP's but thats the honest truth about what their job is 90% of the time.

Wow, Things Have Changed, My Time At Marine Barracks Sure Was Not That, But Then Again, We Did Not Have A Badge To Show Either Back Then, Just An Arm Band. Main Gate Was The Salute Thing Alot, But Other Things Were Going On Also, Like Big Time Security Areas And Escort Of Heavy Duty Chit. Just An Old Grunt Talking.

Some advice from someone whose wanted to be an MP for a while:

Be prepared to hear a lot of crap because of, said MP career.

A LOT of people in the Corps dislike MPs.

Why?! : A lot of them are ignorant and want to feel like they are cool and hand out tickets like crazy from left to right for no real good reason.

They get nicknamed a lot of things like: Pigs, Nazis, etc. etc.

But you know.. who cares what people say. If it's what you want, go for it.

But just like I said, be prepared to hear a lot of negative feedback.

I hope you are quoting what you have heard from other Marines, POOLEE!! Cause don't think for one second that you RATE to bad mouth any Marine that is SERVING or HAS. First EARN the title then get alittle Salt on your uniform then maybe just maybe you can Rate to Bad mouth another Marine. Tell you what, drop and give us 50 rockthemc.

Most of the ones I met were good folks and Marines. They never really talked about their job once we were drinking beer after work. The occasional funny story, that was about it.

Well, the "new Marine Corps" is a little more advanced now that when I entered! (before rope and after dirt) anyway - a while back. All that I can remember my Recruiter telling me was "all I can promise you is three squares a day"! He thought for a minute, not wanting to contradict himself - then added " on the other hand, I guess I can't even promise you that for sure"!!
I had no idea - and I mean no idea of what the Marines had in store for me!! All I knew then was that I wanted to join and no matter what anyone said - this was what I wanted to do. First time I ever really made a major decision on my own!! Of course I was 18, classified 1A, the draft was in progress and I knew I had to go anyway, so why not join ahead of "getting the summons".
Actually the reason I had become so dead set on joining the Marines - well, I had been working for an electrical contractor in VA and about 10 of us went to lunch across the street on a Friday. After we ate, this one guy, Mac (who by the way used to be in Army Airborne) - well, he blurted out "All of us are going to stay here the rest of the day & just drink, and I don't want anyone walking out the door")! Well, one of the guys - Roy (served in the Marines a few years back) - just looked at Mac & said: Just watch me go out the door S.O.B.!! Mac was too shocked to say anything, so Roy just got up & walked out the door - and I was right behind him. Roy was a quiet soul, didn't say much, but when he did you knew he meant it!! I don't think that Mac wanted any part of Roy!! That one incident convinced me, this is the kind of person that I wanted to be, a person with conviction!!
So, I entered the Marines, figured that I would do whatever it was that they wanted me to do - kinda like Forrest Gump!! During my 4 years, I got to do alot of travelling all over, got to see the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, CA, Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, RVN, Puerto Rico, etc., jumped out of planes, went thru all kinds of survival schools, had 10 successful parachute openings on pilot ejections, (which by the way - I was rewarded each time by a bottle of "Crown Royal" to show their appreciation), learned how to - get this - "sew" (had to do repairs on silks and webbing), oxygen systems, loaded bombs & rockets with the ordinance crews and of course did my share of KP and Guard Duty along the way. There are alot of jobs that I'm sure are available and I hope that you get one that you will be satisfied with, because probably 75% of people working do not like their jobs. Or, you may just fall into something that you want to do like I did. Just having the opportunity to "choose" your craft is really a blessing on your part. Its up to you - thats the beauty of your enlistment!! If you want to be an MP - be an MP, if you want to one day become the Commandant, work for it and become one!! You are almost 18 now, you make the choice - its "your life" - its not your buddy, or parent or recruiter's life and future - its yours!! What you decide to do with it is up to you - but weigh your options and choose wisely. So, when you get old & start getting gray like me you can look back & say to your kids "Get out of your racks & hit the deck, your burnin' daylight" and not have any regrets. I wish you well.
PS: I do apologize for not answering your initial question. I knew a few MP's and most seemed ok with their job, but most of us didn't talk too much about what we did when there was some serious drinking to be done as one Marine had already mentioned.

Good Idea. Now, after four years you can go to work pumping gas or being Mr Goodwrench. Either one a quite pleasing profession.

MP's? I know quite a few who parlayed their experience into law enforcement careers.

Poolie Fritz you made an outstanding choice on Motor T, its a good job and one that you can make a living at if you decide to leave the Corps for civilian life. It was good to me all the way around although it can get a bit rough in a combat zone as you are the enemies big slow moving target of oppritunity. One of the best things about it is you can get stationed any where in the Corps Division or Air Wing.
