CHERRY POINT -- Military officials announced that conclusive test results on the active duty Marine suspected of contracting West Nile virus will not be available for another 8 to 14 days.

Initial reports indicated that the military doctors who conducted precautionary tests expected the results on Friday. A Cherry Point spokesman said that tests would be conducted by three separate organizations; the Centers for Disease Control (CDC); the state's lab and the Infections Disease Office. The results of the tests will be released to the public as soon as they are available.

There has been one confirmed human case of West Nile virus in the state, though the virus, transmitted by infected mosquitoes, has shown up in dead birds in about 20 counties in the state.
