Winter warriors wanted for possible Olympics berth

Are you ready to take the “every clime and place” challenge to the next level?
If so, your country has an assignment for you: sledding.

That’s right, Marine, the Corps is looking for snow-loving leathernecks to ride as teams down a narrow ice crevice on bulletlike sleds. Or individually — and head first — on stripped-down sleds called skeletons.

Semper Fit is collecting résumés from Marines with experience in bobsled and skeleton racing, with the aim of sending devil dogs to the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Training Camp at Lake Placid, N.Y. Those Marines may go on to represent the United States in a future Winter Olympics.

“We just got this passed to us, so we thought we’d put it out there to see if anyone wanted to be involved in it,” said Jim Medley, a sports specialist with Semper Fit at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.

Tom LaDue, a spokesman for the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, said the camp was to start in July, but also will be held in August, when the federation holds trials.

During the trials, the athletes try their hand — and feet — at a wheel sled that rides along a rail, he said.

The next Winter Olympics is in Torino, Italy, in 2006, although LaDue said anyone trying out this year should think more along the lines of 2010. See MarAdmin message 297/04 for details.

Did 'Cold Weather' in Ft. Drumm, NY @ '78 or '79. Feb to Apr, -20 to -40. Artic tents, Akieo (sp?) sleds, snow shoes, all that AND a bag of chips.

Wasn't TOO bad, if'n ya kept yer feet moving. But cold weather 'Army Style' wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

BUT DEFINANTLY, gave you a respect for mother nature.
