Marine dies in Afghanistan

Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan — A Marine died of a “non-hostile injury” inflicted by a weapon at the main American base in Afghanistan, the military said Monday.
The Marine, who wasn’t identified, died late Sunday at Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, spokesman Lt. Col. Tucker Mansager said. The incident was under investigation.

Mansager said there were “weapons involved,” but declined to say whether the injury was self-inflicted or an accident, of if anyone else was involved.

“That’s what the investigation will determine,” he said.

About 90 American service members have died in and around Afghanistan since the launch of Operation Enduring Freedom in the wake of the Sept 11, 2001 attacks.

The U.S. government has classified more than one-third as non-hostile, including traffic fatalities and other accidents.
