DoD identifies Lejeune Marines killed in Afghanistan
    June 28,2004
    STAFF REPORTS
    DAILY NEWS STAFF

Two Camp Lejeune Marines killed Thursday in Afghanistan were deployed almost two months ago on a mission to provide security and humanitarian aid, military officials said Sunday.

The Department of Defense announced late Saturday that Pfc. Daniel B. McClenney, 19, of Shelbyville, Tenn., and Lance Cpl. Juston T. Thacker, 21, of Bluefield, W. Va., were the Lejeune troops killed by hostile fire near Bari Khout. Both were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, according to the DoD.

The unit deployed in early May. As part of its mission the 900 Marines and sailors in the unit did everything from operate check points for traffic to security patrol to civilian and humanitarian assistance programs, said Gunnery Sgt. Marcus McAllister, spokesman for 2nd Marine Division.

McAllister said the Marine Corps won't be releasing details of where McClenney and Thacker were at the time of the attack or what they were doing because they don't want enemy forces to know any areas where troops might be vulnerable.

There was no information about whether a memorial service will be held for the two slain Marines at Camp Lejeune, McAllister said.

Thacker's uncle, Kenneth Meadows, told The Associated Press his nephew was shot in the chest and abdomen when he was returning to camp.

Thacker's body was brought back to the United States Saturday, but military officials told his family it would take eight to 10 days before he would be returned to his hometown..

Thacker, who was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, was an only child. His mother, Sharon Bowling, was planning his funeral and had contacted people she wanted to serve as honorary pall bearers.

After the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Thacker dropped out of college to join the Marine Corps. He had recently been engaged and planned to marry once he left the military.

McClenney was a 2003 graduate of Shelbyville (Tenn.) Central High School.

He was a member of Flat Creek Church of Christ in Flat Creek, Tenn., the Shelbyville Times-Gazette reported. He planned to become a police officer after his military service.

Lejeune troops Lance Cpl. Juston T. Thacker, 21, of Bluefield, W. Va. (pictured), and Pfc. Daniel B. McClenney, 19, of Shelbyville, Tenn., were killed in Afghanistan last Thursday by hostile fire near Bari Khout.
