Thats not true....
Last year we presented the Mamaluke sword to a girl at Jacksonville University that was the top Marine option in her graduating class. She started as a Navy but it was quite clear this girl was smart and thus made the correct career move.

I wanted to apply for nROTC but I missed the 12/31/2003 deadline :-( I'm graduating from high school this year but I talked with my recruiter and I'll go to boot camp first then I can apply for the next deadline ! I can't wait to become a USMC Officer !

that person is a cadet? LOL well, I guess you would know for sure they were NAVY by the chest full of ribbons and medals. Navy hands those things out like candy. What ya get em for? Firewatch? Expert floor buffer? correct angles on bed sheets? ( sorry, don't mean any offense, just having a little fun)
Seriously though, what on earth can you do to earn all that stuff in ROTC?

You'd be amazed. Some of it is legit (Distinguished Cadet, the top cadet in each class, Meritorious Unit, top 20 percent of units in the program internationally, or Meritorious Achievement, i.e. saving someone's life, etc.), while much of it is... less so, i.e. , a ribbon for passing the PFT, a ribbon for community service, a ribbon for maintaining a decent grade, a ribbon for drill team, field team, academic team, rifle team... on and on and on. Though I'm not entirely sure what all the rest of that jazz is on the righthand side of his uniform, those decorations/devices are DEFINITELY UNAUTHORIZED by CNET, and any Area CO worth his salt would bust some serious ass for that trash at Annual Inspection.
If you're interested further, check out http://www.njrotc.org , that'll have some good stuff for those who want to know more.
-4 year's NJROTC
-1 NROTC scholarship
-1 Medical NROTC DQ
-4 Denied appeals
Then I wised up and figured out I'd be better off as a Marine, and that's where I'm headed. 34 days to ship date, and I'm ready to go.

Actually Living. Not amazed at ALL. Like I said, the Neavy will give out a meadl or ribbon for anything. they aren't QUITE as bad as the Army, but still, they hand em out like a medic hands out those little orange pills. What the heck where those things called again? LOL I must be getting old. Ican't seem to remember.

Ummm... In the Naval ROTC, participants are called midshipmen, not cadets. That doesn't look like any NROTC uniform I've ever seen either, unless he was in JROTC. Which would explain the grating, cocky attitude I guess.
By the way, LivinSoFree, what was your medical DQ, if you don't mind me asking? Sounds like a bum rap, it's happened to a few friends of mine.

Is that a freakin ear ring??? Square yourself away maggot. Look at all those gum wrappers on his poor excuse for a chest. Irish Pennants below his lower lip...looks like a buffer for a high speed (explative deleted) sucker! And since when do you wear ribbons and medals at the same time on the left breast?

Check out Corona's website...look for the photo of him in Dress Blues with an earing in his lip. Totally UNSAT. You disgrace the uniform. Let me know when you go to Boot Camp...I'll email the picture to your DI so he can give you a second opinion.

That's some nasty trash, I have to say. That kind of **** would've lasted all of 2 seconds in my old HS unit. Of course, we had a retired USMC Artillery Colonel as a senior instructor... but that's a different story.
The medical DQ was a long and involved story that came down to vision and the word of one doc against another on a second issue ("eczema" that doesn't exist), but the irony of it all is, after all those denials, the same guy who kept turning me down had to sign off as the senior OIC on my waiver for the Corps... too bad he didn't pull the file... :-D. In 20 years, when he's long out, I'll have to send him a letter and thank him for making me a Marine.
