    Question Secret Security Clearance Question

    Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone with a secret security clearance or anyone familiar with the security clearances can clear up a question that I have. I just took the asvab, and fortunately I did pretty well on it so I've been exploring the MOS list for the jobs that I'm qualified for.

Does anyone know if I am eligible for a secret security clearance if one of my parents currently lives in a non-hostile country without a US citizenship? I know that this disqualifies me from the top secret security clearance, but I was hoping that I would be fine for a secret security clearance.

    Thanks for your time.

May take extra work, may not, but I don't expect that to be a show-stopper.

Thanks Corporal. If my security clearance application does get delayed / denied because of this, how would I be able to appeal this during bootcamp? Or would I have to appeal it afterwards?

That's a sergeant that's taking his time to offer you advice. You need to learn the rank structure.

There are no appeals in bootcamp. You should be asking your recruiter these questions. What are they saying?

    Thanks Top!

If your SF86 is filled out correctly I don't think you would need to do any sort of "appeal," my complete and total guess is it just may take a little while longer for them to confirm some things. I have a friend who needed a TS clearance in the private sector who had parents who were foreign nationals living abroad, with deep international business ties. It took a long ass time but he got the clearance. I think you will be fine, but that's just an educated guess.

The issue right now is clearances are taking a while to process, and it may depend on whether you can ship if they allow interim clearances in your MOS field. I was recently accepted to army flight school and they don't want to send me to WOCS on an interim clearance, because even though you are allowed to attend with an interim clearance, you can't pin on W1 rank and start the flight school progression until you actually have the clearance. I'd be curious if you could face a similar issue in your MOS field.

Thank god I didn't make this mistake during bootcamp. My apologies Seargent.

My recruiter told me that having parents or any other immediate family member who weren't born in the US are grounds for an automatic disqualification from TS sec clearance so that's really surprising to hear. Definitely a sigh of relief for me though.

What country is your parent a citizen of and what country do they live in?

    Japan

If your parent's Japanese citizenship is the only issue on your SF86, you won't have any problem obtaining a secret security clearance.

    Awesome, thank you very much

Everything disqualifies you but just about everything is waiver able. It all depends on what the investigator thinks. The Marine Corps isn't the one that grants you the clearance it is a third party that says if you are eligible. I know of some Iraqis with a TS so it isnt impossible it just takes a bit longer.

Also, what should I do if my recruiter doesn't let me choose an Intel MOS because he doesn't think I'll get a ts security clearance? From my past conversations with him and some of the other recruiters, it seems like they're telling me that it's not worth listing since they don't think I'll be qualified for it because of my situation despite my asvab scores exceeding the prerequisites.

It all depends you still aren't guaranteed to get anything just because someone else got it doesn't mean that you will. Different times now, they can be more selective. Why not do a little bit of your own research and see what interests you?

Yeah, but it’s just that I think I could contribute most to the Corps in these types of roles (intel, nbc defense specialist, etc.) since I’m not as physically built as most guys in the Corps. I’m also not really interested in positions in admin or something in ut or aviation even though most of those roles wouldnt require a ts sec clearance.

I guess i’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed, but i dont know what to do if my recruiters wont even allow me to list positions that require a TS sec clearance in my preferred choices.
