This Day in 1861--First Manassas (Bull Run)
Anyone interested in history/Civil War? This day in history July 21, 1861, First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)----most people thought the entire war would be decided by this one battle, and people went from Washington D.C. out to the area of the fighting, had a picnic, brought their wives and sweethearts. But the battle raged and soldiers fled to Washington, and the whole outing turned into a nightmare for both the Union soldiers and the onlookers, as they fled back to the city in a panic.

The one thing most people are confused about, concerning the Civil War is.......the South actually won it. Most Americans are not aware of the secret deals that were made, in order to not embarrass the Yankees.

Went to a couple battlefield reenactments in Manassas when I was stationed in Quantico. Fascinating to watch and learn. My favorite is the surgeon's tent and seeing their crude instruments (mostly saws). They always have whiskey bottles for sedation/sterilization and buckets filled with fake body parts! The other eye opener is the thick wool uniforms they wore year-round. Great for those cold VA winters but summer is stifling hot and humid - had to be miserable.

I've never been to a reenactment, Top, but I have read a little about OUTSIDE the surgeon's tents, body parts literally stacked up past the windows, after surgery.
