NROTC rank structure and advancement

Good afternoon, I am a Midshipman 4/C Candidate and I am attending Old Dominion University in August to participate in the NROTC program. The question I have is purely for knowledge only. My question for you Marines and Sailors who may know, is how do Midshipmen gain rank while in college? For example, does advancing from 4/C to 3/C purely require time in rank or does it have to be from achievements/performance?

I am very eager to start this process as it has been a dream of mine to be an officer of Marines since I was a kid. My cousin was a Warrant Officer in the Corps back in the 90's and he has done a great share of guiding me through this process.

I hope to hear back soon; I report on 22 Aug and would like to have some knowledge before arrival!
