    Intel or Avionics

I realize that these are polar opposite MOS fields, but they both appeal to me. I've researched them enough to have a general understanding of what they entail, but I want to make sure that what I choose is something I'll enjoy doing for the duration of my contract AND will transition well over into the civilian world.

    1. What was your experience like or that of someone you know? Overall did you find it rewarding?

    2. If you could start over again, would you pick the same MOS you did the first time you went in?

    3. If you retired how well have you adapted with the set of skills you gained from that MOS? I

I really appreciate any feedback you give and as always - thank you for your service.

    Just a couple thoughts.

Intel. If you transition into a civilian job, chances are you would end up working for a Government agency like the NSA, CIA, DIA, DOD, etc. Since most of these agencies are located in Northern VA or around DC, good possibility that's where you would work and live (many people do not find that very appealing).

Aviation/avionics. Better chance of working with a civilian company/corporation (and away from DC).

    Just something to think about.

Also keep in mind that after 4 years in the USMC, you will be able to essentially get paid to go to college and complete your degree. If you are confident you want a career in aviation maintenance, then that is not a bad way to go. If intel is more appealing to you, I wouldn't let the more limited job prospects based only on the MOS training discourage you. Both are good and important MOS's. I think intel may give you the opportunity for more varied work, that ranges from office side to field side.

As far as intel goes. Cyber is the future both in the military and civilian worlds. Our Commandant has placed a priority on increasing our cyber capabilities. Last year, the reenlistment bonus for MOS 0689 (cyber security technician) was $56,000.00 and 0651 (cyber network operator) was $25,000.00.

Other intel MOS's offering a reenlistment bonus were. 0681 (information security technician) $25,500.00, 0241(imagery analysis specialist) $20,500.00, 0261 (geographic intelligence specialist) $15,000.00.

A number of aviation MOS's offer bonuses in the $15,000.00 range.

These bonuses are designed to keep Marines from doing exactly what you plan to do - take your training and experience into the civilian market place.
