    03 infantry deployment

Hi poolee here. I have a question on infantry deployments. Where do most grunts get deployed to? Middle East or MEU to the pacific? Are we withdrawing troops from the Middle East? And can I volunteer for deployments?and I heard that grunts can't get stationed in oki. Is it true?

    thanks

The 3rd Marine Division (infantry division) is permanently located in OKI (well, at least till they relocate to Guam in a few years). So, yes, grunts do go to OKI for their permanent duty station (currently a 2 years tour). You can volunteer to go there after graduating from Infantry Training Battalion (ITB) after bootcamp.

The current president is reluctant to add more troops to the Middle East. He is leaving more in Afghanistan than he originally wanted to and, he is beefing up the number of troops in Iraq for the push to retake Mosul. Remember, none of these are engaged in offensive combat operations (except for pilots). They are only advisors, trainers, and logisticians. It will remain to be seen, how the mission will change (if at all) with a new Commander In Chief next January.

Our commandant wants to get away from long-term land-locked conflicts. That's the Army's mission. He wants to get back to our amphibious and expeditionary roots (meaning forward deployed and more time aboard amphibious ships - which there are not enough of to do that). He also wants to pivot away from the Middle East and toward the Pacific Rim.

Normally, one does not volunteer to be deployed. Grunts are assigned to infantry units. If an infantry regiment is designated as a Victor ("V") unit, then that means it is deployable. If you belong to a Victor unit and it gets deployed, you'll deploy with it. If you belong to a nonvictor unit, you cannot volunteer to temporarily join the Victor unit while it deploys. So, whether you deploy or not, depends on which unit you're assigned to.

You should keep up with the news and current events about the wars in the Middle East to have a better idea of what is happening regarding the military's involvement.

    Good luck.

We will always have MEUs deploying from the East Coast and the West Coast. There will still be UDP deployments from Camp Pendleton and Camp Lejeune to Okinawa (6 month rotation). Infantry Marines deploy from Hawaii as well.

Bottom line - as an infantry Marine assigned to the Fleet Marine Force, you will deploy. Like most things in the Marine Corps, you won't have much of a choice in where you go
