    National Defense Medal discussion

Some other Veterans and myself at school were discussing this...when will the Corps/DoD stop issuing the NDM?...We understand we still fall under the Global War on Terror but being that we are not fully involved in any ground campaigns anywhere..

we were just saying its gonna be weird when boots start hitting the units and don't have any ribbons...just a cute little shooting badge

That medal issue should have been stopped months and months ago.

I guess the Global War on Terror is what's keeping American Legion eligibility continuously since 1990 to the present. That's 25 years of WAR ERA eligibility for American Legion membership. Prior to that was a 30 day window for Panama, (1989) and Lebanon/Grenada (1982-84), which were actually CONFLICTS. (Lebanon/Grenada era membership wasn't given the green light until until 1989. American Legion groups Persian Gulf War on up to the current date for membership..All I got coming out of boot camp was a cute little sharpshooter badge.

Rifle qualification is a graduation requirement from bootcamp (along with some other things). UNQ would've meant no Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

Medals are nice for they that like to collect them I suppose. I suppose a medal with drilled hole put into a key chain reading something like ANTARCTICA SERVICE would make an interesting conversation piece. How many people have that one?

It may also be issued to active military members for any other period that the Secretary of Defense designates.
