    MOS Help

    I ship to boot camp next month on the 17th, and currently my MOS is Programmer ada, I love science and electronics, programing and computers. So I wanted to know if there's anyone who could give me a more in depth description of how life as programmer in the marine corps is.

    didn't even know that was a MOS option. if that is what you are interested in though, good for you. not sure what kind of training or certifications are involved(if any) but I can bet that it will be some good knowledge and will carry over well to civilian side. Probably requires a security clearance too which is huge if you utilize it correctly

    I'd imagine that MOS is a pretty small community and you'll get to know some high ranking Marines in positions that can make a good career for you if you play your cards right(and you're squared away).

    Don't know how this MOS fits in the cyberwarfare field (if at all). But, cyber security is the future of information technology (IT) in all branches of the military and Department of Defense.

    The Secretary of Defense has stated he would like for there to be some way to bring cyberwarfare technicians into the military at mid-career level positions. In other words, bring them in as Sergeants and Staff Sergeants instead of privates. This is the only way to lure them away from MICROSOFT, APPLE, etc.

    Beginning with Fiscal Year 2016 (starting on October 1st), the USMC is offering reenlistment bonuses for first term Marines in these MOS's:

    0689 Cyber security technician - $51,000 (Cpl) and $56,000 (Sgt)

    0651 Cyber network operator - $24,500 (LCpl), $28,000 (Cpl) and $30,750 Sgt

    0681 Information security technician - $20,250 (LCpl), $23,250 (Cpl), $25,500 (Sgt)

    AND PROGRAMMER CAPABILITIES. AS OF 1 OCT 2005, THERE WILL NO
    LONGER BE A MANPOWER REQUIREMENT FOR PMOS 1181 AND 4067.
    3. THERE ARE CURRENTLY APPROXIMATELY 200 ENLISTED MARINES WHO
    POSSESS THESE SKILLS. FOR EACH MARINE WHO DESIRES TO REMAIN ON
    ACTIVE DUTY, THE MARINE CORPS WILL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO MEET THE
    MARINE'S LATERAL MOVE (LAT MOVE) CHOICE, PROVIDE TRAINING INTO
    ANOTHER JOB SPECIALTY, AND PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE 20
    YEARS OF SERVICE. THIS MARADMIN PRESENTS CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR
    THESE MARINES AND PLACES MARINES WITH THESE SKILLS INTO ONE OF FIVE
    CATEGORIES:
    A. ACTIVE DUTY FIRST TERM MARINES WITH AN END OF ACTIVE SERVICE

    E. RESERVE MARINES WITH A PRIMARY MOS OF 1181 OR 4067 MAY ELECT ONE
    OF THE FOLLOWING CAREER TRANSITION OPTIONS BASED ON RESERVE
    CATEGORY:
    (1) MEMBERS OF SELECTED MARINE CORPS RESERVE (SMCR) UNITS.
    (A) MARINES POSSESSING AN ADDITIONAL MOS (AMOS) RATED AT THEIR RUC
    FOR WHICH A VACANCY EXISTS MAY REMAIN AT THAT RUC AND FILL THE
    BILLET VACANCY. APPROPRIATE UNIT DIARY ENTRIES WILL BE MADE
    CHANGING THE AMOS TO PMOS.
    (B) MARINES MAY RETRAIN TO A MOS VACANCY AT THEIR CURRENT RUC AS
    LONG AS THEY MEET THE MOS REQUIREMENTS (LESS FORMAL SCHOOLS)
    OUTLINED IN REF A. MARINES WILL CONTACT MARFORRES (G3) TRAINING NLT
    1 JULY 2004 TO DISCUSS RETRAINING OPTIONS.
    (C) MARINES WILLING TO TRANSFER TO ANOTHER RESERVE UNIT MAY HAVE
    ADDITIONAL RETRAINING OPTIONS. MARINES CONSIDERING AN INTER-UNIT
    TRANSFER (IUT) WILL CONTACT CMC (CMT) FOR CAREER COUNSELING AND
    COORDINATE TRANSFER VIA THE CHAIN OF COMMAND. IUT MOS RETRAINING
    WILL QUALIFY FOR PRIOR SERVICE TRAINING ASSIGNMENT (PSTA) PROGRAM

    It is not listed in NAVMC 1200.1 or NAVMC 1008-A. You may end up in communications. When I enlisted, it was the Ground Administrative Option. I could end up in Communications or Computers as a programmer. I ended up as a Communications Centerman which has morphed into 0653. That is listed as Defense Message System Specialist(NMOS). I left the Corps in 1984, so I do not know what NMOS means. It seems you must first be a 0651.

    NMOS: Necessary MOS (non-PMOS that has a prerequisite of one or more PMOS's).

    PMOS: Primary MOS

    FMOS: Free MOS (non-PMOS that can be filled by any Marine regardless of PMOS)

    EMOS: Exception MOS (non-PMOS generally FMOS, but includes exception that requires a PMOS)

    AMOS: Additional MOS
