Obama Plans to Name Marine Corps Commandant to Lead Joint Chiefs of Staff

President Obama plans to name Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., a former commander in Afghanistan who now serves as commandant of the Marine Corps, as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, officials briefed on the selection said on Monday.

If he is confirmed by the Senate, General Dunford will take over the top military leadership position at a time of daunting challenges for the armed forces.

Will he still hold the Commandant billet too??...or does he have to give that up?

Gives it up. Will be interesting to see who the next CMC is. Will it be another 0302 like General Dunford, or a 7503 pilot like General Amos.

Not expecting much - the CJCS is mostly an advisor's role to the SECDEF and POTUS. Much of his time will be spent testifying before Congress. But, let's hope General Dunford can somehow slow down some of this liberal social experimentation with our military. We'll see.

A very fast moving General that basically skipped right over the two star to a three...

    Always makes one curious...

Happens all the time...they get frocked to that rank based on whatever the billet is

Disappointed. Liked his planning guidance and thought he had some good ideas for the future - would prefer he stay in the CMC role. Afraid he'll just be the next mouthpiece for this president now. Waste of 0302 talent IMO.

I think that it is shameful to go from a Marine to a politician.

At that level politics is impossible to avoid even for the most steadfast and resolute military commander. You have to play the game or you end up on the beach. I like Dunford, was glad to see an 03 replace Amos. I hope another infantry combat commander becomes CMC.

Read that of the 5 possible candidates for CMC, one is an aviator, and the other 4 are grunts. One is dark green.
