Active Duty U.S. Army to USMC Reserves

Hi all. I'm a female currently active duty in the U.S. Army with a year and some change left on contract. After ETS, I am interested in enlisting in the USMC Reserves for 4 years. I understand I will have to go through Marine Corps boot camp.

I am currently a Specialist/E-4 who will be making Sergeant/E-5 within the next year (yes I am certain). I am an intelligence analyst which directly translates to USMC MOS 0231. My questions:

    1. I was trained as an intelligence analyst by the Army with a deployment (currently deployed). I know I will have to complete boot camp, but will I need to go through Marine Corps AIT for intel seeing I am already trained and with a deployment?

    2. Assuming I make Sergeant by the time I ETS, how much rank could I lose/will I lose rank by enlisting with the USMC? I know this has been the case in some instances, but even if I am crossing over into the same field with experience?

If any of you are recruiters or prior service recruiters or can just shed some info I'd appreciate it! I'd do this myself but I am currently overseas. Thanks so much!

You will graduate boot camp as an E-2. You will lose all your rank. There is no way around that. As far as MOS school goes; you'll do boot camp, then MCT (Marine Combat Training), after that, I'm not sure if you'll have to go through Intel school. 0231's go through the school in Dam Neck, VA. I don't know if our Intel school is the same as the Army's.

I highly doubt you will be able to retain your MOS(equivalent) in the Marine Corps. Your MOS in the reserves is based on what unit is local to you wherever you live/move/home of record. You really don't get to pick whatever you'd like.

You will pretty much lose all your rank, you'll graduate as an E-2 PFC from boot camp for being prior service. You will still have to go to MCT(Marine Combat Training) and then your follow on MOS school(again I doubt you'll be able to retain your Intel MOS as it would need to be available as an open MOS at a local reserve unit).

My personal opinion.....stay in the Army or go to Army Reserve/Nat'l guard where you can keep your rank and retain your MOS.

You will need to go to MOS training.

Can I ask. What is your motivation to enlist in the USMCR instead of the USAR/National Guard? Especially considering what you can expect to lose?

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies and filling me in! To answer your questions, I was considering it because I had initially wanted to join the Marine Corps but the Army gave me the better deal by guaranteeing me my MOS, giving me an extremely quick ship date, and a 3.5 year contract. I am somewhat still interested in joining the USMC but in the Reserve component. But you are right if I am to lose all my rank and go through MOS training again when I can have seniority and higher pay (E-5 pay) in the Army National Guard I just don't see the point. Thanks again!

I would just stick to the Army as you mentioned better pay the quality of life is probably even better in the army. but the grass is always greener.
