    Sergeant Major Green enlisted in the Marine Corps on 27 November 1983 and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of recruit training, PFC Green was assigned to Hotel Battery, 3/11 at Camp Pendleton, California. While assigned as a cannon cocker with Hotel Battery, PFC Green was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal in August 1984.

    In November 1985, Lance Corporal Green was transferred to Delta Battery, 2/12 in Okinawa, Japan. He was meritoriously promoted to Corporal in May 1985. In November 1986, Corporal Green rotated back to Camp Pendleton, California with Delta Battery. Corporal Green was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant in September 1986 and worked with the Marine Corps Nuclear Artillery Battalion as a section chief. Sgt Green was reassigned to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California in 1988 as a Tower Operator for Southern Impact Area Control (SIAC), also known as Long Rifle.

    In January 1990, Sgt Green was ordered to Drill Instructor Duty at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, where he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor with Charlie Company and as the Drill Master for 1st Recruit Training Battalion. He was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in July 1992 and returned to Camp Pendleton California to serve with Echo Battery 2/11. He was accelerated to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in 1997 and promoted to First Sergeant in December 2000. First Sergeant Green was ordered to Inspector Instructor Duty in Bossier City, Louisiana and deployed to South America during that time on operation United Americas (UNITAS).

    In December 2004, First Sergeant Green was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major; he was then transferred to HMLA -169 in April 2005 and deployed to OIF from March 2006 to September 2006. Sergeant Major Green transferred to MALS-39 in February 2007 and in June 2008 he transferred to Headquarters Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps, Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia. Sergeant Major Green was ordered to Marine Corps Forces Europe and Marine Corps Forces Africa as the Force Sergeant Major in August 2010 until present.

    Sergeant Major Green's personal awards include: Legion of Merit (gold star in lieu of second award), Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 4 Gold Stars in Lieu of Fifth Award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 Gold Stars in Lieu of Third Award, and the Good Conduct Medal with 1 silver and 3 gold bronze stars in lieu of his 9th award and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

    Plus, I figure if he was with 2/11 he can't be all bad.

    I am very surprised by this selection, with a few of the other candidates being highly decorated OIF/OEF veterans. And within those few there was one or two that are already legends in their own time.
