I think that battlefield promotions are perm, but battlefield commissions might not always be. My dad went to Nam as a PFC, was meritoriously promoted to LCpl and battlefield promoted to Cpl and then to Sgt, all within a few months (I'm not sure on the exact timing, he did 2 tours though).

I served with a 1stSgt who told me that he had received a battlefield commission to Cpt in Nam but then was reduced after the war. Don't know if its true or not, but boot Pfc's don't question 1stSgts!

There was a time and I believe they did away with it, that under certain enlistment "bonuses" you could sign up for 6 years, and were guaranteed E-2 at graduation, unless honor grad, then you get E-3 at graduation, and if not E-3 in 6 months and E-4 in 13. It was a recruiting trick that got a lot of people signed up, I think.

That's pretty much how it worked - I was a QEP with a fast track to Corporal.

The idea is to keep my nose clean and I get Lance Corporal and Corporal much faster than my counterparts.

The reality is that it was hard to keep my nose clean.

QEP-That's what it was called. Darnit, Enviro. I should have known he would have info on it. It seemed that a lot of non QEPs did not care as much for QEPs because they felt the rank was not earned. At least in a line company it was like that. I had to work extra hard to get the respect. Maybe the subordinates were just that way.
