Opinions on a 6 year, active duty enlistment.

Hello, I was wondering what the consensus was regarding enlisting for six years of active duty. Also, are there any definite negative aspects that are not present in a four year active duty enlistment? Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. gkmoz, I would do that, but I'm concerned that, if I wanted to, I'd be unable to reenlist with the draw down. josephd, I couldn't find much information on six year enlistments, but on this page, http://www.military.com/Recruiting/C..._usmc,,00.html
It talks about a Quality Enlistment Program that requires you enlist for 6 years.
On http://www.futurejarheads.org/yourquestionsanswered.htm Under the heading asking if you can pick up E-5 during your first enlistment, it mentions 6 year enlistment. Also, I found this article though it's from 2007, so it may not be accurate. http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/sh...s-with-a-bonus

those articles seem to be outdated, I have never heard of an enlistment outside of 4 or 5 years(active).

Picking up Sgt, while possible, in your first enlistment isn't likely(MOS dependent).

6 year enlistmebts to my knowledge fall into the reservist realm im sure joseph can clarify in that regards. 5 year contracts seem to be becoming more of the norm for AD than they used to be i had a few individuals in my boot camp plt who had 5 year infantry contracts.

as to picking up sgt in your first enlistment all depends my MOS promotes fairly quickly a lot of intel seems to one of the individuals i went to my mos school with is a sgt just pinned on the 1st of the month and hes only been in for 3 years. I know of an individual who picked up staff in his first enlistment you have to be $#!+ hot though to do it.
