    Dog Tag format question.

Been out for about 20 years now, looking back at my Dog Tags and if I'm not mistaken the fourth line should read'USMC' followed by gas mask size? Well mine say 'USMC C'. Not sure thats a mask size, anyone know what the 'C' stands for? Never thought about it before now, any help would be great. Semper Fi.

Over the years, the content has changed, and each branch of service seems to have developed their own content, style and requirments. Don't forget that the content was what that branch of service needed to impress on their paperwork. This was typically for medical and coroner purposes. Below are samples of each service branch's needs, past and present:

This is how my tags are layed out, line by line

    SWANSON
    A.L. O POS
    SSN
    USMC C
    NO RELIGIOUS PR

Just wondering what the 'C' after'USMC' might stand for if not gas mask size.
Yes, I graduated boot in December '92 and medically discharged July '93 after injuring my back at MCT

    Mine are from 1991-1997

    Last name
firs initial. middle initial. Blood Type
    SSN
    USMC M
    Religion

Maybe it is a typo - On the keyboard the S is close to the C. Some tag making machines were set up like a very heavy duty typewriter and others were a big rotisserie type. Either way, it was a slow process because if something was incorrect, you had to start the whole thing over again.

Not sure if you ever found the answer to you question but my Dog Tags are similar:

    USMC C

I also graduated bootcamp in '92

I went through my BTR today. Under gas mask size it listed "C Medium".

This leads me to believe that the Marines Corps, in its administrative glory, lists the sizes with an alphanumeric code.

    ie
    A Extra Large
    B Large
    C Medium
    D Small

Or something like that. I'm not positive, but it makes sense.
