Marines and sailors from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, joined soldiers from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for the eighth annual Hope for the Warriors oohrah vs. hooah deep-sea fishing tournament, Oct. 3.
Hope for the Warriors’ mission is to “enhance the quality of life for post-9/11 service members, their families, and the families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty.”
The fishing trip was organized as a friendly competition with the Marines and sailors facing off against the Army in two categories: total weight in fish caught and heaviest, single catch of the day.
“Events like this are a great way to bring the different services together and be able to build camaraderie with one another with a friendly competition,” said Sgt. Victor M. Medinamorales, a Marine with 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.
After a long day of fishing and story swapping, the total number of fish caught hit 174. The Marines and sailors achieved a total weight of 152 pounds against the Army’s 58 pounds.
The Marines and sailors also took the heaviest fish portion of the competition by landing a 30-pound Wahoo during the last stretch of the trip, though the Army had led with a 12 pound Amberjack.
“Overall the whole event was fabulous,” said Che` Wright, Hope for the Warriors sports and recreations community relations coordinator. “Everyone had a great time, everyone caught something, and everyone came together and had a blast.”
